Activated automatically from smoke detectors, heat detectors or perhaps also using manual fire alarm activation devices such as manual call points, a fire detection and alarm system warns people when smoke, fire, carbon monoxide or other fire-related threats are detected, using alarm sounders to warn others on the premises that there may be a fire and to evacuate accordingly.

Of course, to be really useful, detectors must be coupled with alarms. Alarm systems provide notice to at least the building occupants and usually transmit a signal to a staffed monitoring station either on or off site, and may also incorporate remote signalling equipment, which would alert the fire brigade via a central station. Most alarm systems will provide information to the emergency responders on the location of the fire, speeding the process of fire control.

Designed to discover fires early in their development, when time is still available for the safe evacuation of occupants, fire alarm and detection systems can reduce the loss of property, goods, downtime in a factory or production setting, or most importantly, serious injury, or loss of life.

To ensure an early warning of fire or any other fire related danger, in situations where a fire could develop and affect escape routes before a building could be evacuated; and to operate smoke control systems or door release devices, are just two examples of where the use of automatic fire detection for life safety in non-residential premises are of utmost value.

However the question still remains: Does every business with premises, or commercial, industrial, retail or public property manager, need a fire alarm system? Legally speaking, not always. But we always recommend that everyone has a smoke alarm or heat alarm in every room where a fire could start.
